FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ABOUT 100cameras + THE WHERE YOU ARE WORKSHOP
WHO IS 100CAMERAS?
LET’S START AT THE VERY BEGINNING:
Founded in 2008, 100cameras is a nonprofit organization that works with youth around the world who have had challenging experiences, and we teach them how to process and tell their stories through photography in a way that impacts how they view themselves and their role in their community. We provide a platform to sell their photographs and give 100% of the proceeds back to fund the most pressing needs in their communities, enabling them to see the impact of their contribution.
BUT HOW DOES THIS HELP?
As showcased in the United Nation University’s report “Cradled by Conflict," renowned research supports our specific approach and programming, proving that youth who have experienced difficulties and were given an opportunity to process and share their past challenges were impacted positively over time. They felt heard and valued and were more likely to become effective contributors to their communities.
WHY PHOTOGRAPHY?
Because we believe that each one of us has a story to tell, and the power of imagery can not only tell it in a vibrant way that reflects each individual’s truth, but it is also an insightful tool to connect with our emotions, our story, our selves and ultimately our surroundings in a way that is unique and undeniable.
WHAT IS YOUR IMPACT?
Through their perspectives and community contributions being uplifted, youth are showing themselves that today and always, they are the bigger picture. More details found HERE.
CAN I TRUST YOU AND THIS PLATFORM?
Your moments are wild and precious, and so we love this question because we too would be curious meeting someone for the first time. In the spirit of show don’t tell, please follow these links that support our organization: Apple, Fujifilm, Adorama, United Nations University, Framebridge, ViacomCBS, and the Whole Kids Foundation (a part of Whole Foods).
P.S. If you’re asking about trust as it relates to our privacy terms, we will never sell or distribute your information. Nor send you uninspiring messages among our commitment to other protections for your privacy — more on that HERE.
WHAT IS THE AGE RANGE FOR THIS WORKSHOP?
We gave this question a lot of thought. Given the natural limitations to create one online resource to serve across the entire childhood/adolescent experience compared to our program classroom experience that can be tailored to work alongside different age groups, we decided it was best for everyone if this workshop was designed for a specific age container.
The full online Where You Are workshop experience is designed to meet participants 11 years or older. However, these opportunities apply to students younger than 11 years old:
11 YEARS AND OLDER: You got this!
8-10 YEARS OLD: Some adult support may be needed to complete activities. We defer to the guardian or educator to decide if the particular individual(s) would navigate the activities well in their online elements. See GUIDE*.
7 YEARS AND UNDER: Will need the support of an adult. See GUIDE*.
*Dear all adult friends, our CEO, Angela, has created this GUIDE for you. With over 12 years of experience with students and being a mom herself, she will walk you through how to apply the activities and our curriculum methodology to modify this experience.
HOW LONG DOES THE WORKSHOP TAKE TO COMPLETE?
There are currently 5 chapters in the workshop (more coming soon). Each chapter takes approximately 1 hour each, and this could be longer depending on the individuality of the participant and how they interact with each chapter’s Photo Adventure activity.
Like our curriculum, these chapters are designed to fit into your everyday programming. Meaning, whatever best suits your schedule right now! The participant could do all 5 chapters in 1 day, or 1 chapter a day for 5 days in a row, or even 1 chapter a week for 5 weeks. Make it work for you!
WHAT KIND OF CAMERA WORKS WITH THESE ACTIVITIES?
For the purpose of the Where You Are workshop and its desire to meet you wherever you may be, we agree with Ansel Adams when he once said, “The best camera is the one you have with you”. Therefore, the activities are designed to work with any camera — whether it be a point and shoot, SLR, smartphone, digital, or film camera. In the case this is not possible, majority of the activities do not need an actual camera to learn and interact with photography, and for the ones that do, a participant could use their imagination about which images they would take for those activities.
DO I NEED ANY OTHER MATERIALS?
Just a pen, paper, and a camera (see above for specifics).
SHOULD I EXPECT TO BE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER AFTER THIS WORKSHOP?
If you are looking to understand compositional techniques to tell a story through photography and to learn new ways to express yourself and how you view the world around you — then yes! You will be a pro. If you are looking to learn techniques such as shutter speed or aperture among other advanced techniques, then no! We are so glad you asked right now before we get started together - those are not in flow with the goals and objectives of this workshop.
WAIT, WHY! ISN’T THIS A PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP?
When creating this resource designed to meet youth wherever they are at, we thought about this question a lot, too. The reality we faced is that each camera out there in the world is designed differently and with unique features. With this fact in play, we could not come alongside each participant well to teach you how to use such detailed settings on your specific camera in this workshop.
But! Check out our full program and curriculum that accomplishes all the things in partnership with local schools, community centers, or children homes!
HOW IS THIS FREE? IS THERE A CATCH?
