100CAMERAS X ALBERT LEONARD MIDDLE SCHOOL

100cameras X Albert Leonard Middle School is a part of a 8 class course that is custom designed by 100cameras to equip passionate creatives with the tools to empower youth in a community they care about with the opportunity to learn how to process their stories and create change. Pictured here are 100cameras students’ shadows during the course.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

100cameras X Albert Leonard Middle School took place in New Rochelle, NY USA in partnership with Albert Leonard Middle School, a diverse suburban public school in Westchester County New York that works alongside approximately one hundred students in sixth through eigth grade.

As reflected upon by the school principal, Camille Edwards-Thomas, “As we return to in-person learning after the long hiatus due to the pandemic, we are eager to get involved with positive programming for our students. We are committed to creating a culturally responsive and sustaining educational environment. In order to do that we are shining a light on the ways we can help students develop their voices, become socially aware, affirm and celebrate their identities, and feel a sense of belonging.”

ALMS provides students with a centered approach through opportunities for each individual to achieve their highest potential. Social interaction is also encouraged, fostering better communicational skills, a sharing of ideas, information, and cultures. The arts are explored through theater, dance, and music, with an instrumental program. The physical education, health, music, art, library and technology programs are also an exciting part of each student’s instruction. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are emphasized, and promote excellence and lifelong learning. Teachers attend to the literacy and language arts skills of each student, ensuring their ability to read, write and think critically in all curricular areas including math, science, social studies, art, music, library skills, and physical education.

I believe the arts are the vehicle for helping students develop confidence and community. 100cameras seems like an approachable program which will allow for students of many different backgrounds and at different academic levels to have a positive life affirming experience, even at an early age.
